A relief as "sculpture protruding from the underground" from Latin relevare "to raise, to lift up"; cf. French relever 'set up') is an artistic form of representation that stands out plastically from the background, mostly from a surface or a body. Reliefs can be figurative, but also abstract ornamental. As an art form, the relief stands between sculpture and painting. Reliefs were made as early as the Upper Paleolithic, such as the 37,000-year-old vulva engravings on the rock overhang Abri Castanet or the approximately 25,000-year-old Venus of Laussel. Originally the depiction of women was attached to a wall of the rock overhang (abri) of Laussel. Significant relief friezes can be found in the Abri Roc-aux-Sorciers (Angles-sur-l'Anglin), in the Abri Cap Blanc (Les Eyzies) and Roc-de-Sers (Charente), where blocks of limestone provide the material for a 17 meter long formed frieze. Animals were mostly depicted, as in the Fourneau du Diable (Dordogne). In prehistoric times, reliefs were mostly placed in shelters, exceptionally also in cave areas (e.g. in the Grotte de Saint-Front-de-Domme). Numerous animal figures etc. from Göbekli Tepe (approx. 9000 BC) are executed as reliefs. The art of the megalithic era (ca. 3500-4500 BC) consists almost exclusively of enigmatically abstract relief depictions (e.g. Table des Marchand, Gavrinis, Les Pierres-Plates, Newgrange etc.). Examples of ancient reliefs in Anatolia and northern Syria, dating from between the 14th and 12th centuries BC. BC come from the Hittite Empire and its successors. Pictorial reliefs were carved in the rock, but pure inscriptions in Luwian hieroglyphs are also present. Famous ancient reliefs are the "giant frieze" of the Pergamon Altar, the Parthenon frieze or the Ischtar city gate from Babylon.
