The starting materials determine the working techniques of the sculptor. They depend on the intended function of the work and influence its form and meaning. Although the most diverse materials have been used for sculptures throughout history, certain preferences and traditions can always be identified. The classic material among metals is durable bronze. Stone and ceramic are not far behind in terms of durability, while wood and bone were cheaper options for the maker. The core and surface can be of different materials: we know that Greek marble figures and other ancient sculptures were painted throughout, which has usually been lost except for microscopic remains. Ancient bronzes were partly gilded. An important formal characterization concerns the degree of plasticity. So is a round sculpture or free sculpture, as we see it e.g. B. encountered on monuments in public places, a sculpture designed for a view from all sides, while a full sculpture can still have a connection to the relief ground or wall. Irrespective of this, all design variants are possible between closed, self-contained volumes and expansive, vaguely defined bodies that enclose spaces.
